Listen to this story: One year ago I was sitting with Josias, a beggar at stoplights in Maputo, and trying to teach him how to read. Why? Because I was trying to teach him how to code. I know it sounds crazy right?

Today I am again, back in Maputo and bumped into him outside a restaurant. He proudly told me that he now has a job and knows how to read well. I’m just so, so happy to hear that.

Let me back-track:

I’ve lived in and visited Mozambique many times, but something gripped me about the boys on…

I’ve been complementing the team (and myself) on a regular basis with how seemingly organized we have become; OKRs, KPIs, Accounts, Team/vision alignment, etc.

But then it struck me how truly innovative companies are in a constant state of semi chaos, and I asked everyone to just act more chaotic,… so that we have more of that “Startup” vibe (I think it’s working.)

Just kidding, I didn’t actually ask them that. — Here’s the report.

Immediately, he lifted his AK47, pointed it to my head, clocked it and shouted “Stop.” Angry, I released the clutch and accelerated ferociously. My friend, David, ducked instinctively, as we raced off, adrenaline, fear and anger all vying for dominance, while I was trying to figure out if risking my life was worth trying to teach police that I rejected their intimidation methods.
